Decks & Staining

Project: Painting a New Pressure-Treated Deck Landing White

A real MG Barillas job: a brand-new pressure-treated deck landing, railings and stairs primed and painted crisp white — what new lumber needs before paint.

Quick answer

New pressure-treated lumber can be painted, but it should be clean and dry enough to accept a coating first. On this landing we prepped the new wood, then primed and painted the posts, railings, balusters and stair parts white so the deck matches the home's trim.

What we found

The homeowner had a newly built landing and staircase leading up to a screened porch. The framing, railings and balusters were all fresh pressure-treated pine — the yellow-green color new lumber has before it is coated. Next to the white house and porch, the raw wood stood out.

What we did

  1. Checked the wood. Pressure-treated lumber often arrives wet from treatment. Paint over wet wood is one of the most common reasons new deck paint peels, so the wood has to be dry enough to take a coating.
  2. Cleaned and prepped. Dirt, mill glaze and construction marks come off first so primer can bond.
  3. Primed, then painted. Posts, rails, balusters and stair parts got primer and a white exterior finish to match the porch trim.

The result

The landing now reads as part of the house instead of an add-on. White railings against the dark porch screens give the back of the home a clean, finished look.

Should you paint or stain new deck lumber?

Both work. Railings and balusters are great candidates for paint because they shed water. On floorboards that take foot traffic and standing water, many homeowners choose stain — our guide on deck paint vs. stain walks through the trade-offs.

Key takeaways

  • New pressure-treated lumber can be painted once it is clean and dry enough to accept a coating.
  • Painting over wet treated wood is a common cause of peeling.
  • Primer plus an exterior finish ties a new deck or landing to the home's trim.
  • Paint suits railings and balusters; stain is often the easier choice for floorboards.

Frequently asked questions

Can you paint new pressure-treated wood?

Yes, once it is clean and dry enough to accept a coating. Paint applied to wet, freshly treated lumber is more likely to peel.

Do you prime pressure-treated wood before painting?

Priming helps the finish coat bond and wear evenly, especially on new lumber.

Do you paint deck stairs and railings?

Yes. We paint and stain decks, stairs, railings and balusters across metro Atlanta.
